my life--my lines: Kaopote

my life--my lines: Kaopote

I.

Unlike our first daughter, we didn't get to name her. She came with one--Kaopote. A white lab she is. Well, kind of. Her mother is purebred. As for her biological father? Nobody knows. As described by the owner--just some dog in my neighborhood. And so Kaopote did come into existence because of 'some dog.' Though she looks very much like a pure lab, her height definitely places her at the edge of the elite's circle. Which is okay. True or fake--we love her just the same. She has as much 'dog-nity' in her as any other dogs, or perhaps more.

After being parted from her mom, Kaopote spent her first six months with an old couple in Samutsakorn. She was supposed to keep them company in their old age, and I'm certain Kaopoe had done just that. But the old couple lived in a big house, with their children and their families, who didn't share the same enthusiasm as their parents and grandparents when it came to sharing the same roof with a 'fake' lab. So, many a day, rain or shine, unaware by the old ones, Kaopote would be chained to a pole, out in the open, away from everyone. I can't fathom what she did to deserve that. I don't think any beings deserve such a treatment. But that's what she got, what they thought she deserved.

That big house was Kaopote's first glimpse into human kindness, her first realization of what we were and are capable of. She learned, sadly, at a very young age how not to give out her heart too soon, particularly to our kind. I wonder if she looked back the day she was brought to our house. Was there anything for her to look back? I also wonder if she looked forward or ahead. In her doggie's view, was there anything to look forward to?

As much as we wanted to have her in our home, we knew it wasn't going to be easy. Our concern, however, was very much with Culi, our first daughter. What would she think of all this? Would she accept another doggie with an open paw? Would she share our excitement? We didn't think much about Kaopote at all.

The day she arrived, my partner was at work, and so it was my job to give her a proper welcome, with Culi by my side. I was nervous, so was Culi--I think. Kaopote got carsick and was a little shaky when my colleague brought her out of the car. I could tell right away that she had a 'trust' issue. Once my friend put her down, she found herself a corner where no one could attack her from behind, where she had a clear view of what was in front, and she was ready to fight. That didn't stop Culi from getting close to her, however. And it didn't take her long to learn how fierce Kaopote was, so she backed off. I tried to get close to her, which was a big mistake. But she was small, so her bite wasn't 'fierce' enough to leave any mark on my hand. Right then, I came to realize how bad she had it at that place. She was very small, and already the world was a bitter place.

[stay tuned for more]
